ABSTRACT

The Georgia economy, along with that of the rest of the Southeast, experienced an economic boom during most of the 1980s. In the second half of the 1980s, the Indiana economy grew at the same rate as the nation's. The economy of the state's northwest is perhaps the least vulnerable to business cycles, while the Indianapolis area is the most vulnerable. In April 1990, a delegation of 27 Democratic and seven Republican congressional representatives from California called for conversion planning. They asked that a California Economic Transition Project be coordinated by the University of California's Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation, to be involved in information services, research, retraining programs, and conversion projects in areas targeted for cuts. The state's healthy and relatively diverse economy helps to lessen its overall vulnerability to defense cuts, but certain geographic areas are heavily dependent on Department of Defense spending.
