ABSTRACT
One of the best ways to get a true picture of the state of things in the West Bank is to review a sample of intifada events that have taken place in a typical week. Since the Israeli occupation of the West Bank after the 1967 war, most of that land has been expropriated by the Israeli government and much of it has been used to settle Israelis. The government admits to expropriating fifty-two per cent of the land in the West Bank, but the Arabs claim that the real figure is much higher, some estimates being as high as sixty-seven per cent. In most cases the Israeli government has claimed it is public land, while in others the owners have refused offers of compensation because that is tantamount to selling the land that was taken without their consent. The only legal recourse against the expropriation of land is offered by the Military Appeals Court.
