ABSTRACT

This chapter considers modernity to be a set of characteristics shared to some extent by all industrial societies, characteristics that are different from corresponding aspects of non-industrial societies. Patrilocal residence, overt deference to elders, etiquette and manners, attitudes toward superiors and subordinates, ideas about the proper position of men and women; all have changed somewhat with modernization, but all have influenced modernization's direction. The modernization of Taiwan's space has two aspects: the actual physcial changes in transport and other infrastructure, and the changing perception of the relationship between different parts of the landscape. Going to play in the valley is one common way that people in Taiwan spend some of their leisure time. Hsiao-yao-yu is the only full-scale amusement park in the upper valley, but there are many other attractions. From the World of Bees it is a few more kilometers upstream to the Man-yueh-yuan Provincial Forest Nature Area, the last attraction in the valley.
