ABSTRACT

Taiwanese painters were encouraged to paint subjects related to the scenery and daily life in Taiwan. Taiwanese painters, however, continued to submit paintings done in the manner of toyoga and many of the jurors were Taiwanese painters trained in toyoga. To be more specific, the artists belonging to the post-war generation seem to reflect, in one way or another, the development of a "Taiwan Consciousness". One of the major figures of the post-war generation is Lo Ch'ing. Lo Ch'ing fled to Taiwan with his parents from the mainland in the early 1950s after the fiasco of the Nationalist government. Thus Lo Ch'ing exemplifies the inevitable emergence of a new generation of artists who look around at their world, who try to represent that world to us in many refreshing ways, and who have opened our eyes to their experience. On the societal level, Lo Ch'ing exemplifies the increase of intermarriage and inter-ethnic social ties between mainlanders and Taiwanese.
