ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the status and development of the informatics industry in Taiwan. It discusses the characteristics of Taiwan's present development strategy and presents the broad economic and political context in which the development of informatics is taking place. The chapter focuses on the situation in the industry with respect to overall output as well as product and market orientation. It describes the targets set by the industry and the efforts that are underway to reach these targets. The chapter proposes the industrial policies put forth by the government to facilitate the island's transition into higher technology and higher value-added industries such as informatics. It deals with some of the outstanding issues that confront both business and government as they attempt to stimulate expansion of this critical industry. In order to promote the development of the informatics industry in Taiwan, the government has set up a series of production and marketing targets over a ten-year period.
