ABSTRACT

In the beginning of 1960, revolutionary focos supported by Havana sprang up in the regions of San Pedro, General Aquino, and Rosario under the name of Frente Unido de Liberación Nacional. The coalition, which included members of the Communist Party, infiltrated a small group of seventeen rebels into Paraguay from Brazil and attacked the village of Capitán Bado. The local police repulsed them, and a few days later they were wiped out by the army. A second attempt was made by a larger force of approximately 200 guerrillas who attempted to establish a base in the jungle along the Upper Paraná River but were found by the army and destroyed. A third invasion, on December 20, 1960, was also a failure. After this defeat, FULNA abandoned armed struggle.
