ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses two issues. First, what does it mean to view the resettlement problem as one of economic development? And second, what are the implications of taking a development perspective for resettlement efforts? Putting the equity issue in the context of the involuntary resettlement problem gives criteria for evaluating policies and programs. The problem of resettlement is a complicated task of economic development. The development of projects that can establish sustainable economic development is an excellent opportunity for social scientists to come together in multidisciplinary collaborative efforts. Moreover, the multidisciplinary teams should include sociologists, economists, anthropologists, and other social scientists, as well as representatives of the various technical disciplines and engineers to provide the perspective of the biological, natural, and physical sciences. Greater involvement of development economists should give more of a forward and dynamic perspective to the project.
