ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the convergence of the three dimensions of uneven development within a small but rapidly growing sector of the economy: high-tech industries. It describes the divisions of labor—spatial, technical, and social—that derive from the development of the industrial sector, and identifies the economic inequalities that are associated with these divisions of labor. The chapter focuses on top high-tech labor market areas to maximize a contrast between the geographic clustering of high-tech industries and that of other industries. One of the major manifestations of the uneven development process of advanced capitalism is a spatial division of labor. The technical division of labor is the result of the organization of labor to produce commodities, be they products or services. The social division of labor is related to the spatial division of labor because firm or plant location can be linked to available labor supply.
