ABSTRACT
Countries with no tradition of electronic industry or telecommunications equipment design and manufacture must take a big step not to sink in the new emerging era of ISDN communications.
Although university laboratories can play a big role in this task, it is the national industry that must lead the effort; otherwise, the targeted goals shall never be fully accomplished.
Trying to illustrate Portuguese activities in this matter, we shall present some accomplished R&D projects developed at our company (Empresa de Investigação e Desenvolvimento de Electrónica, SARL), concerning digital switching equipment for the private telephonic market.
