ABSTRACT
Like most of the other conference speakers, Vladimir Kalashnikov criticized economic conditions in the Soviet Union in general and the performance of the central ministries in particular. He demanded greater glasnost' and the prompt publication of party documents. During the course of his speech he and Gorbachev exchanged words, an occurrence that would often be repeated between Gorbachev and other conference delegates.
