ABSTRACT

The most dramatic event of the conference was unquestionably the clash between Boris Yeltsin and Yegor Ligachev, which personified the controversy between reformers and conservatives. Yeltsin demanded personal rehabilitation and repeated his earlier statements, admitting only that he had not spoken at the right time. Ligachev used his speech not only to settle accounts with Yeltsin but also to review his own record and renew his attacks on MOSCOW NEWS, perhaps the strongest fortress of glasnost' in the Soviet Union. Note the differences in the radio and newspaper versions of Ligachev's speech.
