ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes a silvopasture system to permit reforestation with grazing as a system to recover degenerated secondary forest soils and increase economic returns for Latin American campesinos. There are diverse opinions, and often strong discussions about the value of grazing in forest plantations. The silvopasture unit is a management option designed to accommodate forest tree species, pastures and animals, according to the climate, soil, and slope of each site. This model emphasizes the optimum use of resources in each locality. The silvopasture unit (SU) shows the progression of a single unit over time. In practice, several too many SUs will be established simultaneously with the forest blocks planted on contour. One of the most important problems is to determine the percentage of the farm to be planted in silvopasture units. Many campesinos are small landowners and mainly produce subsistence food.
