ABSTRACT

Thailand has shown very great interest in processed foods. The government of Thailand formulated a program on the use of fisheries products for alleviating malnutrition as part of its preparation for the Sixth National Economic and Social Development Plan. The program is coordinated by the Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives. The government has emphasized the village fish pond program, which was launched in 1982 and accounts for almost a fifth of the Department of Fisheries’ budget. Under the program poor villages can request the Department of Fisheries to prepare and seed ponds for them. Loei Teachers College in the Northeast region of Thailand, for example, is preparing seven different-sized ponds with advice from the Provincial Fisheries Office. The office and the college will work together in the development of ponds in the primary schools in the provinces of Khan Kaen and Loei.
