ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the potentials for the nine countries of the Southern African Development Coordination Conference (SADCC): Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. SADCC is organized on a decentralized basis, with responsibility for different sectors divided among the member countries. Increasing fisheries trade among the SADCC countries could contribute to the alleviation of malnutrition, but there are risks and difficulties. The sectoral coordinator for fisheries is the Government of Malawi. The main source of fish production in Malawi is Lake Malawi, which is shared with Mozambique and Tanzania. The price of fish is lower than that of meat in most areas, but it tends to be scarce and expensive in the northern and central regions, away from the productive southern sections of Lake Malawi. Most of the fish is consumed fresh near the production sites, but smoked and dried fish is transported over wider areas, and some is exported to neighboring countries.
