ABSTRACT

Most regular officers and warrant officers in the Regular support staff (RSS) the author interviewed seemed to agree with the Militia view that regulars generally did not understand it unless they had been RSS. In the questionnaire respondents were asked to say whether they thought regulars regarded them in a professional sense as equal, inferior, or some other way. In fact, all matters that affect their careers are dealt with by their RSS superiors through regular Army channels. Hence, it is curious that the staff schools for regular officers and senior noncommissioned officers at the time made no provision for educating them about the special nature of reserve forces. Apparently, they were expected to learn on the job despite the obvious pitfalls. Even those with Militia experience before becoming regulars were at a disadvantage because much had changed since they left.
