ABSTRACT

The Chinese Communists surely have broken the record for making women and the unborn generation victims of government policies. A first characteristic of the Chinese Communists’ violation of human rights is the frequency with which the Communists have done so on such a vast scale. A second characteristic of the Chinese Communists’ human rights record is the insidious assault on the individual’s mind and integrity. One more characteristic of the Chinese Communists’ human rights record is the pervasiveness of the assault on all sectors of the population. Speculations aside—the question is a matter for future historians—one must broaden the question about the durability of the Chinese Communist party. A far more difficult issue is that successful Chinese economic development bolstered by external assistance in various forms may help make the Chinese Communist party more durable; the long-term human rights costs of such durability would be considerable.
