ABSTRACT

Western hemispheric security has a troubled long-term tradition. There are a number of areas and different types of conflict among states in Latin America. The differences among them throw light on the conflict in each case and suggest possibilities for peaceful solutions. This chapter focuses on the different structures of conflict formation in Latin America and the diversity of power projection of various Latin American states in the hemisphere. The diversity of conflict formation structures and conflict management approaches explains why the current international security positioning of Latin American countries is so diverse. The chapter also focuses on the way that conflicts are handled according to different internal political settings and ideological frameworks. It provides a discussion on the development of the hemispheric security system and on the way that incentives for real cooperation could be developed through specific and single security regimes.
