ABSTRACT

Atlases are simply collections of maps. While it is generally recognized that atlases are essential for many of the social sciences, it is evident that atlases are valuable reference sources for anthropological research because of the descriptive material they contain. Atlases and maps are basic to anthropological research in that they depict locations and patterns of features on the surface of the earth. For additional atlases and cartographic materials, consult the library catalog under the appropriate subject with the subdivision Maps. Maps are of three types: event maps with information on historical places and events; process maps displaying historical processes; or quantitative maps. World maps, diagrams, and photographs provide background for a range of topics, such as language, food production, kinship, etc. Each topic is cross-referenced to ethnographic groups described in "Peoples of the world".
