ABSTRACT
The rise of the microcomputer in the early 1980's has had a significant impact on the discipline of anthropology. With a microcomputer or other computer terminal anyone can now have access to hundreds of commecial databases that may be useful to anthropologists. These databases cover a wide range of subjects from business to zoology, from atoms to aquiculture. This chapter offers an overview of some of the features and capabilities of some online information sources. The diversity and interdisciplinary nature of anthropology produces a variety of databases that may be appropriate for any research project. For example, research in cultural/social anthropology may draw theoretically or methodologically from other disciplines such as psychology, sociology, religion, history, art, and economics. Similarly research in biological/physical anthropology may involve such fields as architecture, nutrition, biomedicine, agriculture, or geology. Over 400 scholarly and general interest publications are indexed, covering anthropology, economics, education, history, political science, psychology, religion, sociology, etc. Presently includes over 550,000 records.
