ABSTRACT

New rituals and patterns of family interaction began to add to the old ones, transforming the Palisades cottage into a home. Family rituals, such as fishing, became the colorful threads of remembrances that strengthened the texture of living and added ineffable pleasure to the senior years. Both the camp in Canada and the ten months of "winter" living in Boston and New York were underlining certain interhabituations that gave rise to distinctive selves and marked a particular family. The Harry Ward family developed what might be termed wholesome ideas about the natural processes of life. The family rituals stressed the development of each member's interests and concerns and respect for each other's efforts.
