ABSTRACT

Sexual abusers may try to appeal to a child’s ego and desire for fame to lure them into an abusive situation. Child sexual abuse involves sexual relations between an adult and a child, whether the contact between adult and child is voluntary or coerced by the adult. Sexual abuse of children may involve the inappropriate exposure of a child to sexual acts or materials, the use of children to sexually stimulate adults, and any other actual sexual contact between children and adults. Sexual abuse occurs when the adult has the power to impose sexual behavior on a child or to manipulate the child into compliance. The most common strategy used today to prevent sexual abuse of children involves teaching them how to protect themselves. Much educational material on preventing child sexual abuse has been created by rape crisis centers, therapists, hospitals, and governmental agencies.
