ABSTRACT

Entering into a formal relationship and becoming part of a couple is an extremely complex and difficult transition; however, it is typically seen as something that is easy and joyous. Traditionally, marriage is seen as an end or solution to many previous problems as well as the culmination of adolescence and the beginning of adulthood. The increase in divorce is most evident in young adulthood, although there has also been an increase in middle and later life. Divorce is more likely in the early years of marriage, in childless marriages, among those who marry young, and among those coming from unhappy parental marriages. The other primary area of involvement for adults is work, which is the focus of an enormous investment of time, energy, and commitment. As the individual develops a work role, it adds to and helps resolve identity issues that have continued from adolescence and becomes one of the focal points for generativity and integrity issues.
