ABSTRACT

New applications of microcomputers can be grouped into the following areas: data storage and retrieval, decision aids and analysis tools, terminals to interact with remote data bases, and devices to monitor and control activities. Record keeping is a tedious and time-consuming task. Micros allow the manager to store more data faster and retrieve it quickly. Information supports decision making that leads to action. Through the use of modems and the telephone lines, microcomputers are being used to access data and information from centralized systems. An important usage for microcomputers will be in the area of monitoring on-going farm activities. The adoption of this new technology is likely to continue at a very rapid rate. While the potential for using microcomputers is great, we also should be aware of the associated limitations. Having a microcomputer adds to the number of tools available to the decision maker.
