ABSTRACT

This chapter presents results from an ongoing investigation of the relationship between drugs, sex and the spread of human immunodeficiency virus among female sex workers and Latino migrant workers in Orange County, California. The area of Orange County in which the study took place is an unusual mixture of high-rise industrial parks, affluent suburban villages and large vacant fields dedicated to agriculture. Data for the study were collected in one of the agricultural areas on the grounds of an industrial nursery where the sojourning migrant workers reside during their time in the US A better understanding of the practices may also lead to different appraisals of the frequency of certain types of sexual activity and the consequent risk that may exist at an international level. Physicians, health care providers and health educators have no mandate just to teach the public; they must learn from them as well.
