ABSTRACT

In the preface of this volume, the question was begged “knowledge for what” with respect to what the social sciences can do. The foregoing papers have demonstrated the wide diversity in which social scientists are now applying their skills in the emerging art of environmental planning, ranging from local-level concerns, socioeconomic development, and planning and mitigation procedures. There is little doubt in this writer’s mind that the social sciences have a tremendous role to play in the years to come if the various disciplines desire to do so.
