ABSTRACT

This chapter describes about teacher education in a country in which teachers experienced various educational systems, such as, precolonial, colonial, and postindependence. Before independence schooling worked in most cases as a means of oppression for children in Namibia. In the classroom teaching and learning become something different. There is more emphasis on a learner-centered approach rather than a teacher-centered approach. After independence the government established teams of educators to develop new approaches, curricula, and ways of organizing the learning environment. Teaching and learning always go hand in hand. Teaching is to facilitate the learning process. In our education reform, teaching and learning not only involve teachers and learners but also the community. Teachers should be encouraged to take the initiative to cooperate in projects that involve parents, businesspeople, and other community members. Reflection in the Namibian context can lead to a different, more positive outcome.
