ABSTRACT

The school at which the author undertook the research was David Bezuidenhout Senior Secondary School, a former colored school situated in Komasdal, an area within Windhoek. Most learners come from the surrounding area, but about twenty percent come from further afield, mostiy Katutura. The learners were expected mainly to listen, respond to the teacher's questions, and explain plant reproduction processes from their previous lessons and a poster provided by the teacher. The tests were voluntary and were written by the same learners who volunteered to take part in the interviews. The teacher educator said that the activities aroused the learner’s interest, that the questions directed and motivated their thinking, and that there were high expectations for learners. The learners enjoy themselves and at the same time they learn a lot. It puts learner-centeredness into action.
