ABSTRACT

The school is in the eastern part of Katima Mulilo. At this school there were sixteen classes with 555 learners from grade eight to grade ten. There were twenty teachers, nine male and eleven female. The school had two heads of department, one male and one female. Within the schoolyard there was a garden that was mainly used for agriculture and life-science projects. According to the results from the questionnaires, twenty of the thirty-five learners attributed the lack of participation of girls to shyness, nine to language problems, three to teachers' domination, two to boys dominating in discussion, and one to the lack of motivation. Mixing girls with boys in group discussion helps learners gain knowledge. Teachers also need to consider girls as their learners to enhance adequate participation. School-based studies are important to the author, having given the author the knowledge and confidence to stand in front of the class and to deliver a fruitful message.
