ABSTRACT

A large proportion of the variance in measures of delinquency and crime as well as the interrelationship of measures of delinquency and crime was unaccounted for by neighborhood characteristics meant that we had only commenced to produce a model with sufficient complexity. As has been said, there is no simple answer to complex questions about human behavior. Interview variables indicative of respondents' home conditions, educational experiences, work experiences, were manipulated by multiple regression techniques to ascertain their relationship to measures of official and self-report seriousness of delinquency and crime and the extent to which intervention was in proportion to seriousness of offenses. Variables included for the regression on juvenile measures were pertinent to the juvenile period, while those included in the regression on adult measures could be for either the juvenile or adult period. The importance of these variables was also greater for persons residing outside the inner city than for those from the inner city.
