ABSTRACT

El Cerrejon has been under consideration in Colombia since 1972, first by the Peabody Coal Company, a subsidiary of Kennecott Copper Corporation, and later by the National Colombian Coal Company, Carbones Colombianos. This chapter provides an account of the exploration, discovery, and feasibility analysis of the large Colombian coal deposit. The western two-fifths of Colombia are mountains divided by intermontane lowlands, while the eastern three-fifths are flat savannahs and rain forests. Colombia's economy is varied and productive as a result of its diverse geographic conditions and abundant natural resources. The United States continues as the major consumer of Colombian products, although less importantly in because of the development of markets in Western Europe and Japan. Devaluation of the Colombian Peso. Colombian exports from Cerrejon and Carare are tied to marketing agreements with Somisa, the state steel works in Argentina, and the Brazilian steel concern Siderbras.
