ABSTRACT

The paradigm shift from bibliographic database to the knowledgebase component of a potential expert system (ES) was facilitated by the fact that the original database had been organized around a series of "recurrent problems". Whether the expertise concerning such a diverse subject as enterprise development could be captured even by a highly sophisticated ES remains a subject for future investigation. While the motivation for the system had much in common with that underlying ESs, its structure had few characteristics of an ES. The generational metaphor of the ES is the active, problem-solving expert. Since the database metaphor was found to constrain an understanding of the potentials of the Assistance to Resource Institutions for Enterprise Support system, the descriptor "bibliographic database" was dropped and the system was rechristened the AskARIES Knowledgebase. This renaming was intended to signal the user that was a product distinctly different from a conventional database.
