ABSTRACT

This chapter examines arguments on both sides of the miniaturization issue and shall conclude that, while Israel probably can build warheads suitable for the Jericho and Lance short-range ballistic missiles, its miniaturization skills are probably not so advanced as to allow for delivery by smaller vehicles. Cruise missiles and howitzers must be eliminated as probable delivery vehicles because of one vital but often ignored fact: Israel almost certainly lacks the miniaturization technology that renders feasible the coupling of atomic explosives with very small rockets and artillery. Israel probably possesses at least fourteen Jerichos, however, as The New York Times reported that by 1970 Israel had received that many in one shipment from France. The Israeli ground-launched cruise missile are mounted on trucks with multiple launch tubes, have a 1,500-mile range, and are equipped with the sophisticated terrain contour matching guidance system, so they can fly radar and steer to target by computer matching of terrain contours.
