ABSTRACT

Several efforts are made to assess the state of German political culture in the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic (GDR). The development of German political attitudes would lead to a prediction of continued political commitment rather than to a prediction of a return to the radical shifts in the past from extreme detachment to extreme commitment. In trying to examine the process of “Political Socialization in the German Democratic Republic,” a systematic effort was made to evaluate social science data from the GDR relating to the concept of the socialist personality. The paramount task of the professional leadership was to provide the correct political-ideological orientation within the Circles of Writing Workers. According to the authors, the dropping of the term “Bitterfeld” acknowledged the international aspect of contemporary GDR literature: “internationally the term was not understood.”.
