ABSTRACT

EDUCOM has helped in the learning process, especially through its role in bringing computer center and technical experts together with college and university administrators. EDUCOM has concentrated on network sharing of computer-based resources. Managers of university computing services are going to have to devise new ways to plan, budget, and manage decentralized and distributed systems and the information they contain. Even though the hardware and the information may be decentralized, there will be the same or even greater needs as exist in centralized computing centers for system and applications software development, maintenance, compatibility, standards, common data element definitions, documentation, and sharing. Sharing and facilitating mechanisms will be as important for distributed and micro technology as they are for larger centralized computer centers.
