ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief review of history of access to and use of "information resources," together with a more detailed examination of the state of the technology, its applications, and some projections for the near future. It considers the state of usage of the technologies by universities for access to and use of information resources. A brief review of the history will set the stage for the present and future of applications of the technology to formalized information resources. Such applications include the mechanization of indexing and abstracting services, the increasing availability of numerical data bases, the creation of various state and regional library networks to facilitate library cooperation, the distribution of library catalog data, and the implementation of library technical processing systems. The applications of the technology occur in virtually every aspect of library operations: reference, numerical data bases, cataloging, technical processing.
