ABSTRACT

The development of Indonesia's oil industry and its past contribution to Indonesia's economic development have been quite dramatic due to the efforts of Pertamina, its energetic past President-Director Dr. Ibnu Sutowo and his staff. Indonesia is looking for additional markets for its oil. The United States is a natural market for increased Indonesian oil sales, both because of its relative proximity to Hawaii and the west coast of the United States and because the very low sulphur content of Indonesian oil is compatible with environmental concerns. In view of the communist victories in Indochina, Indonesia, like other Southeast Asian countries, is becoming a target for intensified communist subversion and insurgency as well as for infiltration of arms left behind by the United States in South Vietnam. Indonesians believe that the security of Southeast Asia is mainly the responsibility of the nations of the region.
