ABSTRACT
Small farmers produce much of the world's coconut products. Land ownership or tenure may significantly affect small farmer production systems. To enable successful use of coconut lands for mixed farming systems or, alternatively, to ensure success of pasture or fodder production by small farmers, some management steps or considerations especially tailored for small farmers may be necessary. Work at the Tanga Livestock Experiment Station had shown that grazing dairy cattle under the palms controlled weed growth, improved milk production, and raised coconut yields. This work provided the technical basis for a project which sought to alleviate the land tenure and related management problems. Small farmers will require only a few kilograms of most pasture seeds. Zero grazing may be a very suitable option for small farmers. Access to credit for small farmers may become a problem.
