ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the efforts of a successful entrepreneur in organizing for the sale of "instant accommodation" in the form of prefabricated housing in the Gulf. The markets of the Middle East, greatly lubricated by the recently acquired oil wealth, were a strong magnet for Pieters. He directed his attention to the Middle East and commissioned a report in early 1974 to identify areas and countries where he should consider operations. Pieters should identify specific projects in construction and establish one of these projects on a pilot basis in order to gain an understanding of the region. Pieters proceeded to visit several countries in the Gulf and emerged with a highly positive report on the prospects in the region. The challenge for Pieters was to arrange for a supply of prefabricated units from the United States. He was relieved to make arrangements for the implementation of his housing project without having to proceed to the Middle East.
