ABSTRACT

This chapter presents marriage between Arab oii wealth and American managerial expertise in an American investment opportunity. The marriage was intended to produce a luxury resort complex on an island off the South Carolina coast. The chapter examines the difficulties that arose and the efforts to resolve them. It discusses two distinct parts: the environmentalist/ethnic opposition to the project, and the later lawsuit between the Kuwaitis and Sea Pines and considers the different approaches to negotiation of Kuwaiti and United States groups. For the South Carolinians the Kuwaiti investment was a response to their vigorous efforts to attract foreign direct investment and a chance for a renewed stimulus to a part of the state which had long been stagnant and backward. The Kuwaitis were close to a final deal for purchase of Kiawah Island in January 1974. The Kuwaitis were distressed at the national publicity given to the Kiawah opposition.
