ABSTRACT

Realization of the important role that Comprehensive Review had for implementing sound cultural resource management was underscored at the time of government reorganization. The term Corprehensive Review and within the Department of Natural Resources includes those projects and programs normally included by Circulars A-95 and A-85, plus projects and programs that the Department and State have agreed to review for various federal agencies. This chapter addresses the governmental and planning requirements for cultural resources from an archaeological perspective. The Historic Preservation Section utilizes the Comprehensive Review System to establish contact with project agencies early in their planning process. The problems of reasonable cultural resource management on the Georgia coast are, of course, more complex than simply advising a project agency that statistically there is high probability of an archaeological site being located in its project area. The chapter discusses approach to the creation of cultural resource management policy presently under development in Georgia.
