ABSTRACT

Maria Eva Duarte de Peron, the renowned Evita, was certainly one of the most extraordinary women of the twentieth century. Since the Juan Domingo Peron regime rested basically on the twin support of the armed forces and the organized labor movement, the attitude of the military leaders meant that Evita Peron stood no chance of achieving or maintaining power other than that which her husband provided her. Evita's labor activities were carried out in a variety of ways. It was her custom to hold one day a week free to meet with any labor leaders who had problems that they wanted to bring to her attention. Within a short time the Sociedad de Beneficiencia was legally dissolved, and in its place was established a new organization, the Eva Peron Welfare Foundation. The Welfare Foundation was a unique kind of organization.
