ABSTRACT

The net cultivated area (N.C.A.) was calculated at about 18.85 million acres by the 1960 census of agriculture. The average N.C.A. during the 1960's according to the statistics of the Department of Agriculture was 20.94 million acres. An Agricultural Census was taken in 1960, on a 10 percent sample survey basis. Its accuracy has been described as being at the 95 per cent probability level with two standard errors. From the data of this Census it is estimated that there were 6,170,610 cultivator holdings. Agronomically, the height of a plot above normal water level is of primary importance. Fields which are normally flooded in the rainy season are classed as low-level. Fields which are normally not liable to flooding by rivers or Khals are classed as high level. Traditionally crop fertilization has been confined to the use of cowdung or oilcakes on cash crops such as sugarcane and tobacco.
