ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the current situation of education in Eastern Europe, in terms of general trends and developments and in reference to the specific educational structures. Education in Eastern Europe has always been the product of a variety of factors and influences. The basic foundation of the educational systems of Eastern Europe, as indeed in any country, is comprised of the goals and the tasks assigned to educators and education. The pattern of educational administration typical of all Eastern Europe, except Yugoslavia, which will receive special attention, revolves around a ministry of education and supportive organs in a highly centralized and tightly controlled system, some with mechanisms provided for public participation. Cultural events play a larger role, and the children spend more time in study circles and political education. Despite increased numbers of secondary school graduates and growing demand for more opportunities, little has been done to make higher education more accessible in Eastern Europe.
