ABSTRACT

Gerhard Lenski states very eloquently the importance of reuniting biology and sociology. Sociology’s interesting, but remarkably unproductive, misadventure into the land of pure environmentalism seems to be ending. Lenski’s writings have made a signficant contribution in this regard. Sociologists should not only be aware of this progress; they should also be contributing to it wherever social behavior is involved. Sociobiology is a likely candidate for assuming the catalytic function. Even if the discipline has seriously compromised the academic excellence required of sociology graduates, the discipline still encapsulates an impressive reserve of creative, competent, and dedicated practitioners. Also, much of the empirical research carried out under old sociological perspectives actually should be very useful in sorting out a lot of the most probable theoretical formulations under the new paradigm.
