ABSTRACT

The discovery and celebration of forgotten women continues to be a central aspect of women's studies. One can find book-length biographies of most famous women simply by looking in the catalog under their names. The lives of less renowned women, however, are more likely to be detailed in a collective biography, a biographical dictionary, or a magazine article. The chapter highlights the most useful biographical sourcebooks. With a single exception, these focus solely on women, thus rectifying omissions in standard scholarly and popular reference sources. The chapter describes research tools that can lead researchers to biographies, autobiographies, and diaries.
