ABSTRACT

In addition to providing printed bibliographies and indexes, many libraries offer online access to bibliographic information. Most of the major indexing and abstracting services can be searched by computer, including such important sources as the New York Times Information Bank, Magazine Index, Dissertation Abstracts International, the Monthly Catalog of Government Publications, and scores of others. One of the great advantages of online bibliographic searching is the capacity to generate citations on a precise intersection of topics. Some bibliographic data bases can be searched by established subject headings; some, by keywords in the titles; and some, by keywords in the abstracts or full texts of the documents. Many data bases permit all three approaches. In addition, one can frequently limit the search by the year of publication and/or by language. Libraries usually access online data bases through vendors. Catalyst Resources for Women is a specialized data base for researching the lives of working women, especially women in the businesses and professions.
