ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author focuses on China's growing ties with African countries as well as with Latin American countries, another part called Third World. He aims to make reference to China's role in the volatile Middle Eastern countries. India turned down the Egyptian request because of a Soviet veto, but China gave Egypt thirty engines for MiG-17 and MiG-21 fighter/bombers as "gifts," which led to an immediate warm-up of the relationship between Beijing and Cairo. China is targeting some of its diplomatic efforts toward Latin America to complete its network of Third World supporters, stymie a successful rival effort from the Soviets, and further isolate Taiwan. Although China has not abandoned its moral support of the national liberation movements in the Third World, China puts a much higher priority on government to government relations than on promoting people's wars.
