ABSTRACT

The concept of aggression as a natural life force has many implications for designing less violent social environments. A new way of generating ideas for the reduction of violence, based on a theory of aggression as a natural life force, can be developed. The concept of nonviolent aggression fits the major findings that are emerging from the new family therapies. The optimal political conditions for nonviolent aggression are, of course, part and parcel of a democratic society. Aggression between groups needs to balance real power for self-assertion and self-defense with serious peace-making and peace-protecting efforts. A commitment to encourage nonviolent aggression in a society would mean supporting a healthy diversity of opinion in the communications media. International agencies, by their very definition, are communicators among peoples, and each international body represents a wealth of opportunities for work toward nonviolence in international affirs.
