ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on four areas of China's modernization: its pursuit of the program on the basis of the actual conditions; the characteristics of the Chinese style of modernization; the importing of advanced technology; and the prospects for the economy in the 1980s. Historical materialism holds that the economy is the base of the social system, so the foundation of any nation, whether socialist or capitalist, inevitably rests on the economy. The idea of Chinese-style modernization means to modernize the country in light of the actual conditions of the economy. Chinese-style modernization is based on the socialist public ownership of the means of production. One of the problems facing the Chinese style of modernization is how to reconcile economic planning with the market. In addition to importing advanced technology, China must learn how to manage modern enterprises so as to raise efficiency, that is, to obtain maximum results with minimum costs.
