ABSTRACT

One of the most significant developments of the decade of the 1970s for world agriculture has been the Multilateral Trade Negotiations. The Tokyo Round of negotiations concluded in April of 1979. Although it was the seventh in a series of multilateral trade negotiations since World War II, it was the largest and most significant, especially in terms of its impact on agriculture. The United States placed continuing emphasis on agriculture throughout the negotiations. All nations stand to gain from the Tokyo Round agricultural advances because all nations have been affected by the proliferation of trade barriers in the postwar period. With food the primary element for human survival, protecting the domestic agricultural economy from competition is seen by many nations as vital to their economy. Probably the most widely known of the national agricultural programs is the European Community's Common Agricultural Policy.
